Junior Competition & Carnivals
Competition is quite possibly the most successful recruiting tool for the Surf Life Saving Movement. The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events for all ages culminating in the Junior NSW Championships each year.
Who can compete?
U8 - U14s are the only age groups allowed to compete at carnivals. There are no competitions for U6 & U7 age groups. Anyone who has completed their Club Participation Proficiency Requirements and Junior Competition Qualification can compete. You can review the proficiency requirements and competition qualifications here.
Where are carnivals held?
Carnivals are mainly held on the Northern Beaches although some U11-14 carnivals compete further afield. The State Championships will again be held at Umina Beach this season, a 90 min drive from Sydney.
Carnivals are held in the Sydney Branch also and keen competitors may choose to attend these if there is no event on in our branch. There are also a few “series” style events that Queenscliff like to be involved with. The main one is the Sydney Water Series which is held in the Illawarra branch. See link. http://www.surfpremiership.com.au/
How long do the carnivals go for?
Carnivals are usually held over one day. Most carnivals marshal at approx 7.45am, with a club warm up being held at 7am. Most carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day.
How to enter?
Advise your Age Manager in the first instance and complete an online entry for the relevant carnival here. The online entry system will remain open up to approximately 5-10 days prior the carnival (note closing dates on the Carnival Information page). If you do not enter by the closing date entry will not be covered by the club and you will need to enter on the day of the carnival, if this is permitted. It costs the club anywhere from $11-$20 per nipper to enter into carnivals and we do not get a refund if you don't compete.
What to Bring?
There are Queenscliff tents that we provide for our members and we ask parents to bring their own umbrella/tent/chair and sit nearby. You will require plenty of water and food to last the day, high visibility vest, suncream, nipper cap, club costume, goggles, swim cap and warm clothes if the weather/wind turns.
Queenscliff has a variety of fibreglass and foamie boards that members can use at carnivals. This craft will be transported to the carnival via our board trailer, and the boards will be taken to the beach near the tent. You are required to bring back any craft used to the tent immediately after your race.
How can parents help?
Without the help of parents, nipper days and carnivals would not be able to be held. The club needs to supply one official and one water safety officer for every nipper entered. Eg 70 nippers entered, 7 officials and 7 water safety officers. Officials courses are run throughout the season, check the Season Calendar for upcoming courses.

Queenscliff also compete in a number of team events at carnivals during the season. Selection into these teams is made by the Age Group Managers, Club Coaches and both the senior and junior Competition Coordinators and is based on performance with the ultimate decision lying with the Junior Competition coordinator.
