Annual Golf Day

Annual Golf Day

2014 Golf Day at Long Reef Golf Club

Having never attended a whole QSLSC Golf Day I was overwhelmed at the success and the wonderful atmosphere of this year’s event which was held last Friday, 14/11/14 at Long Reef Golf Club.  130 golfers hit off, on a “shot gun” start, across all holes of the course and our three Life Members, who recently left us, organised the most magical weather.

Thanks must go to all the sponsors and generous contributors who added immeasurably to the day and the outcomes.  I am told that the prizes for the golf scores and other performances at this event surpass many much larger events.  There were big golf prizes for the top 6 places plus nearest the pin and longest/straight drive.  Then we had a classic auction lead by a professional Auctioneer from Cunningham’s Property as well as a monster raffle , both of which also boasted quality prizes that everyone could endeavour to secure.

Further thanks and appreciation must also be extended to the Long Reef Golf Club as well as our band of club members who worked behind the scenes all day, many of whom did not play golf on the day.  Sandy and her team at Long Reef GC were exceptional, once again.  They cater, support, guide and generally allow everyone to enjoy their hospitality and the magnificent facility’s setting. Our stalwart helper-members have their tasks down pat and like a well-oiled machine deliver & collect signage, prepare “Bob Berry hot mustard and ham rolls”, arrange and present the prize stage, serve drinks and rolls across the course, make mini-trophies, MC the luncheon, flog raffle tickets, issue then mark cards and do what Dave Piper has taught us all, “collect money from everyone”.

The “best dressed” award will be back as a major prize in 2015 - possibly for best dressed team and for best individual outfit.  We had some amazing contenders this year with a number of teams having tailored event shirts, full look-alike outfits and right through to the most eye-catchingly memorable pair of shorts ever worn onto a golf course – so we agree that we must reinstate this award,.

This day is one of our major fund raising days and more importantly it is a terrific Club day. Next year we will try to get sponsored holes and players from every section of the Club.  It is well worth the effort.  Lastly, 2015 heralds our 12th Annual Golf Day and we will have a brand new committee because a number of the foundation members have now retired.  We extend our immense thanks to them and the new team will aim to build on their model and record.  So, until 2015, thank you again to our sponsors and contributors and as Happy Gilmour once said, “keep on skipping and flogging”.
